  Point of Origin
Translated by Jon Levitow (2009)

My body under the surgeon’s knife
lay sliced open like a fish.

Everything inside me ran
like mice run around on a sinking ship.

Only somewhere
rested a point,
an island, silent, on its own,
completely whole, without a sound,
set apart from the chaos around.

From then on I can attest
that such a thing exists in man,
at once within him and without –
which has no terror of the knife,
which in itself rests like the Crown,1
and endures.

----------------------------------

1. Crown: Heb: “Keter,” the highest of the ten “sephirot” or mystical formations which constitute the basis of the “Kabbalah.”  As the primeval stage of creation, “Keter” has no form and so, not being subject to differentiation or transformation, it knows perfect “rest.”
