Jack (Janek) Lewin |

Jack (Janek) Lewin  is remembered with affection in Melbourne, where he lived as a young man, and admired in Los Angeles, where he and his wife made their home, for his consummate acting on the Yiddish stage. In Melbourne many years ago as a child I and Janek acted together on the Kadimah stage in Melbourne, in Jacob Waislits’ production of Di Hiltserne Shisl.

Janek’s artistry can be heard on this website, reciting poetry by Aaron Tsaytlin and by Moyshe Shimel.

In 2008 I was fortunate indeed to see Janek perform his own original translation to the stage of the essence of Mendele Moykher Sforim. This was at the LA Yiddish Culture Club, and his performance was glowingly introduced by the remarkable Lilka Majzner o.h.

For a number of years Janek has been writing poetry, and he has been published in Kheshbn (L A). We have chosen three recent poems. For the first, Di Zun, a moving depiction of old age, he has provided an English translation.

The autobiographical third poem, Nekht, frankly intimates the experience of survivors, as the years pass.

  The Sun

Translated by Hershl Hartman

The sun of those autumnal days
no longer warms as in the past
and sparks die out
instead of igniting
one’s hunger
to reach the mountain peaks.

Today the mountains
sleep behind grey fog-banks
and where a blue river
once sated its shores,
now its bottom lies bare
and silent.

דער צױבער פון הימלען ;
