  The old song
Translated by Miriam Leberstein (2010)

The cat’s washing itself,
that means guests are coming –
says Mother,
and she smoothes out the towel
that she’s ironing.
And I smooth out the sun
that spreads across the table,
and I stretch out my hands to the guests.
Three grandmothers have come to visit,
deep bonnets on their heads,
deep pleats in their dresses.
We sit down on the ground.
The fat onion plant
sits in a flower pot and reeks.
Its leaves are good for healing sores –
says one grandmother
and she lifts a finger from the dust.
And another grandmother
holds a cat in her lap.
And another grandmother dozes.
The sun goes down.
Mother is still smoothing the towel
that she is ironing.
She looks out the window and waits
for her guests.
Her hands grow large,
already they cover the whole table.
The sun lights up my shoes.

I get up and
go over to the old cupboard.
The old cupboard,
riddled with holes
from woodworms and rain,
wobbles on its feet.
